I have been using windows 7 for almost a week now and i feel it is time to write up my findings. What can i say about it! its a big step up from Vista, which, lets face it, was just a prettier version of XP. This looks and feels so much better. The system uses the same Aero theme used in Vista, with a different taskbar. This taskbar is greatly improved, although I was sceptical at first. The new icon buttons that replace the traditional buttons are obviously there to support touch screens which is a big hint that this is where Microsoft wants to take the operating system. The selection panel that pops up if you have more than one window open is slightly annoying, as it requires at least 2 clicks to get where you want. however these are the only negatives I can find.
The positives include the snappable windows. By moving a window to the side of the screen it is resized to take up half the screen, this makes multitasking incredibly easy. Media Player has also been updated to allow streaming of data. This worked without a hitch will allow home users to have one primary “server” and then satellite laptops will be able to access the content without the need for huge hard drives. Other nice features include the interactive backgrounds that change over time, and the compression of icons in the bottom right hand corner into a menu system, allowing only the most important to be seen.
Generally Windows 7 is great. Requiring less resources than Vista it has clearly been developed with net books in mind, and with Microsoft about to launch an online version of Office and Windows Live finally coming together it seems that the company is getting back on track.
